DC Meat-Free Week has been a huge success, thank you to everyone who went out and supported the Restaurants and for everyone who helped make it so successful, especially Amber McDonald who I know spent a lot of time on this event. We got press from NBC, VegNews, City Paper, just to name a few. We will be defiantly doing this again in the future, no date set yet, but we will let you know!

To end DC Meat-Free Week we have added one more restaurant, the Science Club for Sunday the 14th. Come out and celebrate with us from 6pm to 3am, for Drinks, delicious Vegan dishes, and music!!!

Best African Restaurant – Ghana Cafe
This Adams Morgan favorite provides authentic West African food and features many veg-friendly options. Be sure to sample the fufu, a favorite among Ghanaians and locals alike.

Best American Restaurant – Ben’s Chili Bowl
Is there anything more quintescentially DC than Ben’s? Established in 1958, Ben’s Chili Bowl has an amazing history, but it is still thoroughly modern chili. Ben’s features veggie chili, veggie chili fries and veggie burgers. Plus, Ben’s is 100% wind powered!

Best Asian Restaurant – North Sea Restaurant
Let’s withhold names to protect the innocent. Let’s say only that one DC Vegan contributor has North Sea on speed dial…and North Sea keeps her credit card on file. Once, when her phone was broken and only text messaging worked, this contributor texted a friend her North Sea order then had her friend call in the order. Yes, North Sea is that good. Consider it the ultimate hangover cure.

Best Bakery, Best Cupcake and Best Vegan Restaurant – Sticky Fingers Bakery
Oh, Sticky Fingers, how we love thee. From your lickable oatmeal cookie sandwiches to your divine carrotcake cupcakes to your insanely delicious breakfast sandwiches… how do you do it, you devil you? You wrap us around your finger with your little bites of heaven. If we could, we would marry you and have your babies. Sticky Fingers, we are yours. (Psst, call us.)

Best Burger – Science Club
After several weeks of working with COK, Science Club recently unveiled a new vegan menu. Enjoy the fruits of their labors, including DC’s best veggie burger, at an upcoming Vegan Drinks.

Best Coffee Shop – Busboys & Poets
Founded by Anas Shallal, an Iraqi-American artist, activist and restaurateur, Busboys & Poets is a great place to sip fair trade coffee, talk, listen and interact.

Best Drunk Eats – Julia’s Empanadas
With locations open until 4 AM, Julia’s is bound to get more than a few post-bar visits. Fortunately, Julia’s doesn’t get as rowdy as Jumbo Slice and offers a new delicious vegan empanada daily.

Best Guacamole – Pedro & Vinnie’s
Vegan delights on wheels! Operating out of a cart on 15th & K Streets, Pedro & Vinnie’s makes burritos using only the freshest (never frozen, never canned) ingredients. People regularly rave about the taste (great), size (huge) and price (low) of their burritos. Sample their many hot sauces, but don’t forget the guac!

Best Indian Restaurant – Nirvana
If you think that veggie burrito wasn’t heaven, you can still find Nirvana a few blocks away. Nirvana provides vegan versions of Indian classics. Don’t miss their lunch buffet if you’re extra hungry.

Best Middle Eastern Restaurant – Amsterdam Falafel
Amsterdam Falafel is an Adams Morgan staple and a city-wide favorite cheap eat. Smother your falafel with goodies from their all-veg toppings bar, and don’t forget the fries, which are easily the best in DC.

Best Pizza – Washington Deli
Since nixing cheese, do you miss pizza? Real, ooey, gooey New York-style pizza? Fret no more. Washington Deli is here to help. This little hole-in-the-wall features a different vegan pie every day, which you can purchase by the slice.

Best Place for the Obamas’ Date Night – Taberna Del Alabardero
Vegan paella, made for two. What could be more romantic?

Best Restaurant When Someone Else Pays – Equinox
Equinox is no stranger to “best of” awards. In 2008, Equinox won the Restaurant Association Award for Best Fine Dining, and Chef Todd Gray’s cooking has earned him five nominations for the Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic award from the James Beard Foundation. We recommend Gray’s five-course vegetarian tasting menu, but do it on someone else’s dime.

Best Thai Restaurant – Sala Thai
The first Thai restaurant in Dupont Circle, Sala Thai uses fresh ingredients and adds no MSG to their food. Their menu features a special vegetarian section.

Best Vegetarian Restaurant – Java Green
You know it, you love it, and so do we. What more can we say about Java Green? Only that we’re eagerly awaiting their second location, which will add alcohol to their offerings.

We strongly encourage you to “vote vegan” in Washington City Paper’s Best of DC 2009. Let’s get the word out that DC values cruelty-free options and local businesses who give back.

Happy Hour specials will be from 7-8 (they start at 6), we will have a list of what’s vegan.

At around 8 we will be doing shout outs, a chance for you to promote yourself, a group, or a cause. We will give you about 30 seconds to do your spiel, so be prepared (literature, business cards, fliers, etc…). We will have a signup sheet for those who are interested in doing a shout out–please limit shout outs to vegan/animal rights and welfare issues.

The event is being hosted at the Science Club, a restaurant and bar in downtown D.C.–and after working with Compassion Over Killing for the last few weeks, they’ll be unveiling several new vegan menu options on Monday night!
