DC City Council Adopts Meat-Free Mondays

On Tuesday morning, the D.C. City Council hosted a presentation of its newly adopted “DC Meat-Free Monday” Ceremonial Resolution. The resolution, which highlights the benefits of adding more fruits and vegetables to our diets and encourages residents to “abstain from animal products on Mondays,” was introduced by Councilmember Yvette Alexander (Ward 7) last month and adopted by the entirety of the D.C. City Council.

Following the Council’s presentation, Compassion Over Killing dished out over 100 free meatless meals for D.C. City Council Members, staff, interns, and others in attendance of the event. The all-vegan meal included vegan fettuccini alfredo with “chicken” and Caesar salad.

VeganFest 2010

Since Great Sage will have the honor of being the first to offer the new award winning Tofurky Pizzas, they thought it would be fun to throw a party and call it VeganFest! Which will aslo be a charity event for Compassion Over Killing.

$20 advance entrance fee ($25 at the door) and that all goes to COK. For the $20/$25 you will receive free pizza, cake, and coconut ice cream (and some other vegan treats to be named later). There will be a cash bar. There will be a band from 7:30-9:30, also to be named later.

I’m Clucky To Have You!

During the month of February, Sticky Fingers Bakery will be selling “I’m Clucky to Have You” Valentine’s cards, which you can personalize with a note to your sweetie. The cards will be added to a heart-shaped window display inside Sticky Fingers.

The back of card includes a special note of compassion for passersby outside the restaurant to read—and 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these cards will benefit COK’s work on behalf of farmed animals. Each card is just $1.

What better way to show your loved ones—and the animals—how much you care? And while you’re at Sticky Fingers Bakery filling out your “I’m Clucky to Have You” card, be sure to indulge in some deliciousnous, and don’t forget to bring some home to sweets for your sweetie!

Meatless Makeovers– A Vegan Cooking Class with Mimi Clark

Does your New Year’s resolution include eating healthier and more compassionately? Compassion Over Killing has a cooking class for you!

Join COK and vegan chef Mimi Clark for a Meatless Makeover cooking demo designed to teach you how to take your favorite recipes (such as classic dishes like meatloaf and Chicken a la King) and give them a healthy, animal-friendly makeover! Guests are encouraged to bring their favorite recipes to discuss ways to make healthy substitutions. Class includes recipes, food samples, and coupons.

December DC Vegan Fundraiser for COK

Last month DC Vegan and DC Vegan Drinks raised over $500 for FARM. For the month of December we will be doing the same thing for Compassion Over Killing.

COK is a nonprofit animal advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C. Working to end animal abuse since 1995, COK focuses on cruelty to animals in agriculture and promotes vegetarian eating as a way to build a kinder world for all of us, both human and nonhuman.

COK continues to do great work for animals and promoting a vegetarian lifestyle. With your help they can continue this work. Our goal is to raise $1000, to donate CLICK HERE, all proceeds go directly to COK.

MORE INFO: Bread and Brew is not a 21+ place so those of you under 21 are welcome to come and have a good time. Make sure you DON’T eat before coming so you can have some wonderful Vegan food prepared by Chef Eugene. Happy Hour drink specials are $3.00 rail drinks (rum, vodka, tequila & gin), all drafts and bottled beer are $1.00 off and will run till 9pm.

THE BASICS

DC Vegan Drinks is a monthly offline social networking event for people interested in sharing veganism and advocating for animal rights. Our mission is to bring together people from all walks of life (lawyers, students, small business owners, etc…) to build a stronger community and promote the sharing of resources. A lot of people build these networks online but never really connect socially, this is where our shin-dig falls in. There is no requirement except for an interest in veganism, animal rights, and to have a little after-work fun.

What you need to do:

Be friendly, even to any non-vegans that may come.

Talk about what you do in your free time, what business or organization you work for, who makes the best vegan cookie, your blog, etc…
Oh, most importantly, have a drink and relax with some fellow vegans.

What to bring:

Business Cards (if you want to share).

If you don’t have business cards–flyers or pamphlets are cool too. Please remember to keep all distributions related to animal welfare/animal rights/veganism/etc.

Cash for tips for your friendly bartenders.

Other info:

There is NO dress code, come how you feel. It’s FREE, but drinks are NOT and food isn’t either. Bring CASH to tip your bartenders. Some of the places we visit are 21 and over so make sure you check above to see if this months is.

COK exposes Dunkin Donuts egg supplier

In August 2009, a Compassion Over Killing investigator worked inside an egg factory farm owned by Michael Foods, one of the nation’s largest egg producers. While employed there, the investigator used a hidden camera to document horrific abuses including:

* Hens immobilized in the wires of their cages, unable to access food or water
* Decomposing and “mummified” corpses left in cages with live birds
* A Michael Foods employee decapitating a hen
* Birds suffering from overcrowding, severe feather loss, and untreated injuries.

Bread & Brew: Special Vegan Brunch & Movie Sunday Benefiting COK

Join us at Bread & Brew on Sunday, July 5 for a food- and fun-filled benefit event featuring a special COK Day vegan brunch menu, plus two movies: “The Princess Bride” and “Ten Things I Hate about You.” This event kicks-off Bread & Brew’s new “Brunch & Movie Sundays”—and 10% of your vegan brunch bill will be automatically donated towards our farmed animal advocacy work! Be sure to invite your friends and family.

How to Be a More Effective Activist with Bruce Friedrich

Join Compassion Over Killing for a free vegetarian dinner and presentation by Bruce Friedrich, Vice President of PETA and co-author of the newly-released book, The Animal Activist’s Handbook. Friedrich will discuss ways each us can be more effective advocates for animals and how to engage in persuasive and meaningful conversations about animal rights. The Handbook is a guide for anyone who wants to make a real, significant difference in the world. Friedrich, who joined PETA’s staff in 1996, has been a progressive and animal activist for more than two decades.

The event is free and open to everyone! Vegan dinner will be provided.
