Check out the NEW DC Vegan Classifieds

I am currently working on a new DC Vegan site, DC Vegan Classifieds. A Vegan classified ad site for DC!

You could say the site is still in Beta, but it is fully functional. I am still working on ad categories and some design work. I need some people to post ads so I can see if there are any bugs. It would be greatly appreciated if I could get some DC Vegan readers to post some ads, real ads only please. If you run into a bug or have a suggestion let me know. Email me at tim@dcvegan.com

Thanks!

Miriam’s Kitchen Responds to City Council Resolution with Meat-Free Day

In response to the DC City Council’s passage of a ceremonial resolution urging Washingtonians to eschew animal products once a week, Miriam’s Kitchen has adopted a meat-free Friday program. Miriam’s Kitchen, which provides healthy homemade meal services to DC’s homeless men and women, chose Friday (in lieu of Monday) because of their donation schedule.

Support for Miriam’s new meat-free initiative has been overwhelming, with donations of tofu, tempeh and other vegan products rolling in from Whole Foods Market P Street, Whole Foods Market Georgetown, Nasoya, Turtle Island Foods, Gardein Garden Protein, Lightlife Foods and others.

This Friday, employees of the Physician’s Commitee for Responsible Medicine and Compassion Over Killing are volunteering their time to cook and serve the first of many Meat-Free Friday meals at Miriam’s Kitchen.

Vegan Condoms Spreading Love Worldwide

For those of you that are into cruelty-free safe sex there is a new Vegan condom coming to a eco-friendly store shelf near you. Vegan condom you say??? Yup!, for those of you that may not know most latex condoms contain casein which is a milk protein, so that would mean that they are NOT Vegan. Sir-Richards…you could say is the most ethical condom on the planet, besides being cruelty-free, for every condom bought, Sir-Richards will donate one condom to a country in need..such as Haiti, Uganda, and Thailand. Sir-Richards as also given out free condoms to help fight climate change. Sir Richard’s is aiming to make condom buying more of a fashionable experience in the US, where the majority of people are sill embarrassed to buy them. Sir-Richards Condoms should be available sometime in October.

For more information visit their website Sir-Richards and check them out on Facebook

So apparently there are a few street vendors downtown selling Tofurky Veggie Dogs. I rarely if ever eat from one of the carts, I am not saying they are bad, just not my thing. But if you are looking for a quick and CHEAP (only a dollar, is that right?) bite and your near one go check it out and let them know your happy to see them have a Vegan option and they should think about getting more items.

DC Healthy Schools Act passes unanimously

The decision made by the District of Columbia City Council to unanimously approve the DC Healthy School Meals Act on June 2nd is receiving applauds from Farm Sanctuary. The law will establish local nutritional standards for schools meals, as well as make plant-based meals and dairy-free beverages more readily available at schools in the DC area.

“By passing this law, the D.C. City Council has taken a significant stand for the health of the capital’s students,” notes Dr. Allan Kornberg, executive director of Farm Sanctuary. “As a pediatrician with more than 25 years of experience, I have seen first-hand the extraordinarily harmful effects of unhealthy diets on children. Providing nutritious, cruelty-free food to students is a basic yet incredibly vital way to immediately improve the lives of our nation’s youth.”

Farm Sanctuary has launched a national campaign to mass the federal Healthy Schools Meals Act. Serving as an amendment to the Child Nutrition Act, the new legislation would offer financial incentives to schools throughout the country that offer students plant-based food and non-dairy beverage options. H.R. 4870 would also rescind a current requirement that only requires children to receive dairy-free alternatives after providing a note from the doctor.
