THE BASICS

DC Vegan Drinks is a monthly offline social networking event for people interested in sharing veganism and advocating for animal rights. Our mission is to bring together people from all walks of life (lawyers, students, small business owners, etc…) to build a stronger community and promote the sharing of resources. A lot of people build these networks online but never really connect socially, this is where our shin-dig falls in. There is no requirement except for an interest in veganism, animal rights, and to have a little after-work fun.

What you need to do:

* Be friendly, even to any non-vegans that may come.
* Talk about what you do in your free time, what business or organization you work for, who makes the best vegan cookie, your blog, etc…
* Oh, most importantly, have a drink and relax with some fellow vegans.

What to bring:

* Business Cards (if you want to share).
* If you don’t have business cards–flyers or pamphlets are cool too. Please remember to keep all distributions related to animal welfare/animal rights/veganism/etc.
* Cash for tips for your friendly bartenders.

Other info:

There is NO dress code, come how you feel. It’s FREE, but drinks are NOT and food isn’t either. Bring CASH to tip your bartenders. Some of the places we visit are 21 and over so make sure you check above to see if this months is.

The Lost Tourists

Need some new tunes for when you are stuck waiting at a Metro station?

9626_149428066756_120700616756_3386985_4840675_n

You should check out The Lost Tourists from Fredrick, Maryland. They have been together for about 2 years, and have since recorded 2 four song EP’s and 2 demos for their upcoming full length album, all while playing at countless shows. Their music style is best defined as experimental/post hardcore, although they are influenced from different styles. One of the things that they promote are animal rights, stating that animal rights goes hand in hand with their love for the Earth and how it is depleted by unnecessary practices such a factory farming. I couldn’t agree more considering I just learned that it takes less water to produce a year’s food for a pure vegetarian than to produce a month’s food for a meat-eater (John Robbins, Diet for a New America, 1987). Dylan, David and Zoe are vegan, Andres is vegetarian and Anup is neither but he is accepting of the lifestyle. Not only do The Lost Tourists promote animal rights, they also promote human rights (Human rights = animal rights). They work with Invisible Children, dedicated to stopping Joseph Kony’s war in Uganda. Recently, The Lost Tourists had a benefit show for Invisible Children that not only had a great turn out but best of all, they raised more than $350. Good music for good causes, what could be better? You can check out their music on their Myspace or on Pure Volume. If you dig what you hear then you can become a Fan on their Facebook page. Their next show will be on November 3rd at the Mt. Airy Firehall.

Farm Sancuary Benefit Wrap Up

Last night Farm Santuary had a benefit in DC, Party For The Pigs. A benefit for 69 pigs that where rescued in the Iowa floods. There was a great turnout! The party was hosted at the Equality Center, which is a beautiful building, off of Rhode Island Ave. The event was catered by Java Green and several others, which was super, always love me some Java Green. Farm Santuary had video and a wonderful slideshow of the pigs that were rescued. Nellie McKay also played a few of her songs which are always great. I am not sure if Farm Santuary reached their goal of $30,000 but I know they were close. Overall it was a wonderful night and it was great to see so many people come out to support Farm Santuary.

Woodstock Farm Benefit

On September 20th, Nellie McKay & Dan Piraro will be combining their talents for a one night only event at the Colony Café (Because while the Colony Café isn’t a vegan establishment, the restaurant will be veganizing their menu for the event.) in Woodstock, NY to benefit the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. So what do a soulful cabaret singer and a hysterical cartoonist have in common? THEY’RE BOTH ALL ABOUT THE VEGANISM!

The evening is hosted by the Mid-Hudson Vegetarian Society (MHVS) and tickets are just $20.
