About DC Vegan Drinks:

DC Vegan Drinks is a monthly offline social networking event for people interested in sharing veganism and advocating for animal rights. Our mission is to bring together people from all walks of life (lawyers, students, small business owners, etc…) to build a stronger community and promote the sharing of resources. A lot of people build these networks online but never really connect socially, this is where our shin-dig falls in. There is no requirement except for an interest in veganism, animal rights, and to have a little after-work fun.

What you need to do:

* Be friendly, even to any non-vegans that may come.
* Talk about what you do in your free time, what business or organization you work for, who makes the best vegan cookie, your blog, etc…
* Oh, most importantly, have a drink and relax with some fellow vegans.

What to bring:

* Business Cards (if you want to share).
* If you don’t have business cards–flyers or pamphlets are cool too. Please remember to keep all distributions related to animal welfare/animal rights/veganism/etc.
* Cash for tips for your friendly bartenders.

Other info: There is NO dress code, come how you feel. It’s FREE, but drinks are NOT. Bring CASH to tip your bartenders. Some of the places we visit are 21 and over so make sure you check above to see if this months is.

August 2nd: Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness

Remember how we told you that vegans are scrawny, pasty, twig-eating freaks? Well, please don’t tell Robert Cheeke we said that. A vegan and champion bodybuilder, Cheeke will be in DC on Monday, August 2, to discuss how to get killer calves without killing calves.

Cheeke will be joining Compassion Over Killing at DC’s Bread & Brew to discuss his amazing new book: Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness. Following his talk, Cheeke will sign your copy and answer any fitness and bodybuilding questions you might have. Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness is Cheeke’s first book and is based on over ten years of experience in vegan bodybuilding. Striving to inspire and motivate, this book answers readers’ questions from what to eat and how to train to how to turn your vegan fitness into an effective form of outreach.

Taking Action for Animals starts today!

Taking Action for Animals, a conference for animal advocacy put on by the Humane Society of the United States, starts today!

Friday has a couple optional workshops and an evening welcome reception. The conference goes into full force on Saturday July 24.

Learn how you can tap into your skills to help animals. Each day, there are workshops based around the following tracks: Building Skills, Learning the Issues, Public Policy, and Reaching Out. You can choose the one that is most fitting for what you want to learn or accomplish in your own life. Monday is lobby day, when you can join with others to ask your elected officials to pass laws that help, not hurt, animals.

Be sure to pick up the special limited coupon from Cafe Green, DC’s only all-vegan, full-service restaurant, that will be available at Compassion Over Killing’s exhibit table in the Exhibitor’s Hall.

The conference is at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park. Of course, all the food served is vegan.

Miriam’s Kitchen Responds to City Council Resolution with Meat-Free Day

In response to the DC City Council’s passage of a ceremonial resolution urging Washingtonians to eschew animal products once a week, Miriam’s Kitchen has adopted a meat-free Friday program. Miriam’s Kitchen, which provides healthy homemade meal services to DC’s homeless men and women, chose Friday (in lieu of Monday) because of their donation schedule.

Support for Miriam’s new meat-free initiative has been overwhelming, with donations of tofu, tempeh and other vegan products rolling in from Whole Foods Market P Street, Whole Foods Market Georgetown, Nasoya, Turtle Island Foods, Gardein Garden Protein, Lightlife Foods and others.

This Friday, employees of the Physician’s Commitee for Responsible Medicine and Compassion Over Killing are volunteering their time to cook and serve the first of many Meat-Free Friday meals at Miriam’s Kitchen.

DC City Council Adopts Meat-Free Mondays

On Tuesday morning, the D.C. City Council hosted a presentation of its newly adopted “DC Meat-Free Monday” Ceremonial Resolution. The resolution, which highlights the benefits of adding more fruits and vegetables to our diets and encourages residents to “abstain from animal products on Mondays,” was introduced by Councilmember Yvette Alexander (Ward 7) last month and adopted by the entirety of the D.C. City Council.

Following the Council’s presentation, Compassion Over Killing dished out over 100 free meatless meals for D.C. City Council Members, staff, interns, and others in attendance of the event. The all-vegan meal included vegan fettuccini alfredo with “chicken” and Caesar salad.
