]]> Remember how we told you that vegans are scrawny, pasty, twig-eating freaks? Well, please don’t tell Robert Cheeke we said that. A vegan and champion bodybuilder, Cheeke will be in DC on Monday, August 2, to discuss how to get killer calves without killing calves.

Cheeke will be joining Compassion Over Killing at DC’s Bread & Brew to discuss his amazing new book: Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness. Following his talk, Cheeke will sign your copy and answer any fitness and bodybuilding questions you might have. Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness is Cheeke’s first book and is based on over ten years of experience in vegan bodybuilding. Striving to inspire and motivate, this book answers readers’ questions from what to eat and how to train to how to turn your vegan fitness into an effective form of outreach.

]]> On Tuesday morning, the D.C. City Council hosted a presentation of its newly adopted “DC Meat-Free Monday” Ceremonial Resolution. The resolution, which highlights the benefits of adding more fruits and vegetables to our diets and encourages residents to “abstain from animal products on Mondays,” was introduced by Councilmember Yvette Alexander (Ward 7) last month and adopted by the entirety of the D.C. City Council.

Following the Council’s presentation, Compassion Over Killing dished out over 100 free meatless meals for D.C. City Council Members, staff, interns, and others in attendance of the event. The all-vegan meal included vegan fettuccini alfredo with “chicken” and Caesar salad.

]]> Please join Compassion Over Killing on Saturday June 26 to leaflet through DC, starting at the Pentagon City Metro station, and then stopping at the Gallery Place/Chinatown and Columbia Heights Metro stations for 30 minutes each. After the last stop, they will head over to Sticky Fingers Bakery for some well-deserved dinner. Plus, you’ll receive a free COK t-shirt for participating in this event!

COK be meeting at the Pentagon City Metro station at 3:30 p.m. to load up on literature & pick up t-shirts. If you can’t make it to the first stop but still want to help, please let me know!

The first event is Tuesday, June 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with a portion of the vegan food and drinks sold going to COK. To kick this first event off, DJ Denman Anderson will be performing at 8:00 p.m. We’ll also be celebrating Francesca’s, COK’s Outreach Manager, birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRAN!!!!

]]> Compassion Over Killing has been doing a lot of restaurant outreach, working with great restaurants around DC to get Vegan items on the menu. This month COK’s feature restaurant is Founding Farmers.

Opened in September 2008, Founding Farmers offers farm-inspired American true food and drink in a modern, casual and eco-friendly setting. From our modern farmhouse, our menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner include homemade and ’scratch-made’ traditional American classics inspired by the heartland.

Founding Farmers is located three blocks West of the White House at 1924 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W. Washington, D.C. You can download their new Vegan menu here.

I have not had a chance to visit yet, but the menu looks great and I will defiantly be making a trip their soon. If you have been let us know what you think!

]]> Since Great Sage will have the honor of being the first to offer the new award winning Tofurky Pizzas, they thought it would be fun to throw a party and call it VeganFest! Which will aslo be a charity event for Compassion Over Killing.

$20 advance entrance fee ($25 at the door) and that all goes to COK. For the $20/$25 you will receive free pizza, cake, and coconut ice cream (and some other vegan treats to be named later). There will be a cash bar. There will be a band from 7:30-9:30, also to be named later.

Cruelty-free creme filled donut created by Danielle, representing DC.

In March, Compassion Over Killing asked you to take part in their 2nd Annual “Create Dunkin’s Next Donut Contest” asking you to create your very own vegan donut, to inspire Dunkin’ Donuts into offering a cruelty free option. Well, now the 12 finalists for the Dunkin’ Cruelty Donut Contest are in! An expert panel of Compassion Over Killing’s Erica Meier, Vegan Treats’ Danielle Konya, Vegan.com’s Erik Marcus, VegNews’ Elizabeth Castoria, and Ecorazzi/VegDaily’s Michael Parrish DuDell reviewed the entries and selected 12 finalists.

Vote for your favorite creation and the winning donut will be hand crafted by Vegan Treats and available for a limited time in it’s bakery. Polls close Friday, May 21st and the winner will be announced in June. By voting, you will be automatically entered into a random drawing to win ten different prizes, from t-shirts to books!

]]> That’s right! Starting on April 26th, Bread & Brew started kicking the meat off their menus and offering a Meatless Monday menu. This popular, green-certified and veg-friendly restaurant is getting even more eco-friendly by offering a 100% Meatless menu every Monday! The menu features Bread & Brews popular vegan menu items, such as the vegan mushroom florentine. There are also new specials, including a vegan “steak and cheese” sandwich. Yum!

]]> The date for DC Vegfest 2010 has been announced! Save the date of September 11th, 2010. DC VegFest is a FREE outdoor festival celebrating the very best of everything vegetarian in and around the nations capital, organized by Compassion Over Killing and the Vegetarian Society of DC.

Rory Freedman, author of Skinny Bitch talks to the audience at DC VegFest 2009 about being patient with meat-eaters.

Last year was the first DC VegFest, which attracted both vegans/vegetarians as well as meat-eaters interested in learning more about living a compassionate lifestyle. Planning is still under way for DC VegFest 2010 but be sure to mark your calendar for this all day vegan friendly event.
