“By passing this law, the D.C. City Council has taken a significant stand for the health of the capital’s students,” notes Dr. Allan Kornberg, executive director of Farm Sanctuary. “As a pediatrician with more than 25 years of experience, I have seen first-hand the extraordinarily harmful effects of unhealthy diets on children. Providing nutritious, cruelty-free food to students is a basic yet incredibly vital way to immediately improve the lives of our nation’s youth.”

Farm Sanctuary has launched a national campaign to mass the federal Healthy Schools Meals Act. Serving as an amendment to the Child Nutrition Act, the new legislation would offer financial incentives to schools throughout the country that offer students plant-based food and non-dairy beverage options. H.R. 4870 would also rescind a current requirement that only requires children to receive dairy-free alternatives after providing a note from the doctor.

In March, Compassion Over Killing asked you to take part in their 2nd Annual “Create Dunkin’s Next Donut Contest” asking you to create your very own vegan donut, to inspire Dunkin’ Donuts into offering a cruelty free option. Well, now the 12 finalists for the Dunkin’ Cruelty Donut Contest are in! An expert panel of Compassion Over Killing’s Erica Meier, Vegan Treats’ Danielle Konya, Vegan.com’s Erik Marcus, VegNews’ Elizabeth Castoria, and Ecorazzi/VegDaily’s Michael Parrish DuDell reviewed the entries and selected 12 finalists.

Vote for your favorite creation and the winning donut will be hand crafted by Vegan Treats and available for a limited time in it’s bakery. Polls close Friday, May 21st and the winner will be announced in June. By voting, you will be automatically entered into a random drawing to win ten different prizes, from t-shirts to books!

In honor of Earth day, Compassion Over Killing is teaming up with DC’s professional women’s soccer team, The Washington Freedom, to host TryVeg Day, on Sunday, April 18th at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Not only will COK be distributing pro-veg materials and informing people about how they can fight global warming with their forks, the concession stands will feature vegetarian options. This veg-friendly game day is a great opportunity for people to help the animals and planet while cheering on The Washington Freedom.
