Fashion is my Girlfriend

Fashion is my Girlfriend is a blog dedicated to vegan fashion, started by Kandace Levy, a 22 yr old senior at University of Maryland. Even though the blog was started less than a year ago, Kandace is already breaking down that stigma that vegans aren’t stylish (Then again, what’s stylish about wearing a dead animal?) I sat down with her for an interview and she explained how easy it is to be vegan and look like a million dollars.

After the interview, Kandace & I enjoyed a delicious meal at Berwyn Cafe.

M: How long have you been vegan and why did you choose veganism?

K: I’ve been vegan for a little over three years, I started sophomore year of college. Actually, I was a straight up carnivore, as many species as I could get on a bun that’s what I wanted to eat. Literally, in one night I became vegan. I stumbled upon goveg.com and I made a couple conclusions. The main revelation that I had was recognizing where my food came, realizing a hamburger was a cow as opposed to food.

M: There’s nothing attractive about eating flesh. So, how did Fashion is my Girlfriend come about?

K: Partly because I would read other fashion blogs and there is a lot that I wanted to see that I wasn’t. I wanted to start a blog that incorporated all of the cool things I saw from other blogs but with more ethical responsibly and also more environmental responsibility. I wanted to start a blog to inform people on just how easy it is to find amazing pieces and not have to harm animals in the process.

M: Definitely. Where do you get your inspiration for your blogs? Any particular fashion icons that you gain ideas from?

K: A lot of my inspiration comes from just seeing people on the street, nature inspires me a lot. Whatever hits me, whatever I’m randomly thinking about during the day. The blog is basically my fashion stream of consciousness. I wanted a blog that addresses the issues that mean a lot to me. I want to offer solutions to how things could change.

M: You’re breaking down the stigma that vegans are boring and dull with their style. Would you agree?

K: I think that people try to pigeonhole and stereotype the minorities. You can be vegan and be just much in the modern world as everyone else. You can wear the same kind of style that someone who isn’t vegan is wearing but you don’t have to compromise your values and you don’t have to harm the environment and animals to do so. It’s really easy to be vegan and look stylish.

M: Do you have any tips for our vegan fashionista readers? Any local DC clothing stores that you are into?

K: There are these amazing coats by Vaute Couture (http://vautecouture.com/). That’s one of the hardest things to find, a warm winter coat. They are made out of recycled materials, so cute. Its’ actually cheaper to be vegan. Better for your wallet and better for everyone in general. One place that I love, Annie’s Cream Cheese in Georgetown (http://www.anniecreamcheese.com/), you can find a lot of great vegan clothes. Go to thrift stores, you can always find unique clothing there. Not to mention, it’s a fun way to recycle.

Bottom line: Kandace states that Fashion is my Girlfriend is a blog committed to showing vegans (and non-vegans) that you can look absolutely fabulous without sacrificing an animal and be eco-friendly, to boot. I know whatever Kandace pursues in the future, she will be representing all of us glam vegans and telling the world that veganism is so much more than what you put into your mouth.

I know this is an old post, but this is where I had originally heard of this wonderful blog – Fashion is my Girlfriend. I was a regular reader and then about a month ago I noticed that it has gone…

Do you know what happened? Did Kandance change domains or leave blogging all together?

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I’m not sure what happened to her blog, seems like she has given up blogging all together (but I hope I am wrong).
