The Unlikely Contenders

This article is co-written by Sonya Harway and Jeff Chubb.

So you all know about Vegetate, Java Green, and the other popular vegetarian restaurants in DC, but where else can you go for a delicious veg*n meal? Say your grandmother is coming to town and wants to go out for a traditional omni dinner, or perhaps you’re going out with a large group of friends and don’t have time to convince everyone that they will love tempeh and seitan… So you need a restaurant where everyone can be happy with meat dishes AND meat-free dishes! We’ve compiled here a list of “unlikely contenders,” or omni restaurants that have a few outstanding vegan options for when you want to share the table with your meat-eating friends.

Go out to eat!

  • Go for breakfast some weekend at Keren and order ful (fava beans) and a great espresso, no milk. You have to ask for your check here– it won’t come automatically– and it’s not fancy, but it’s cheap and DELICIOUS. And great hangover food, I might add!
  • Try the veggie platter at DC Cafe– if you substitute okra for tzatziki/lebneh (yogurt), it’s completely vegan. Have a mint tea and check out all the pictures of famous people on the walls.
  • Order the bibambap at Adam Express with tofu and avocado instead of beef and egg. Beware though– the kim chee has fish/shrimp paste.
  • This one’s probably already on your radar, but go for a veggie pizza with no cheese at Astor (they do carry vegan cheese now, but we recommend cheese-less). Enjoy the caraway seed in the pizza dough, roasted eggplant, spinach, and kalamata olives. And treat yourself to some dolmades (grape leaves) beforehand.
  • My favorite dish hands-down at Chinatown Express is the sauteed green leaf with garlic (with all the condiments that decorate the table). You probably already know about the handmade noodles, but try the ma po tofu next time– delicious!
  • Mandu will make a completely vegan version of several dishes, including duk bok gi, a stewy dish with glutinous rice cakes. And YUM, have a sojutini while you’re there– all the flavors are incredible. Unfortunately, the kim chee here also has shrimp paste in it.
  • At Sticky Rice on H Street, all the vegan dishes are clearly marked, but we especially recommend the Mock Chicken Szechuan… And there’s also a dish called Dirty Vegan, how can you resist?
  • Malaysia Kopitiam has many omni dishes that can be made veg*n, but I especially liked the Gluten with Scallions and Ginger.
  • If you’re in the mood for a splurge, try the vegan dinner tasting menu at Equinox; it’s not a printed menu, but they do “cooking on the spot” so the chef puts together the vegan highlights for you
  • There are several branches of Pain Quotidien around town with a vegan-friendly menu– go for brunch some day and have a pastry (especially the green tea muffins), the Six-Veggie “Quiche” (made with tofu, not eggs!), and soy milk rice pudding. The menu clearly notates which items are vegan, which is pretty impressive for a chain restaurant, don’t you think?
  • The pizza crust at Open City is now completely vegan, hopefully with dairy-free cheese to soon follow. (Feel free to put the pressure on, but in the mean time, just go cheese-less.) They also have a tofu scramble on their All-Day Breakfast Menu, in case you get the hankering for breakfast at 4 p.m.

Feel free to add your own suggestions for those hidden gems in the comments section. What other secrets do you have that we should all know about?

Thanks to Kerry and Kristin (who I met at DC*Vegan Drinks this month) for their suggestions, too! No thanks at all to Howard. :D

Behind the Labels

The Cornucopia Institute provides information through research regarding organic agriculture for concerned consumers.

cornucopiaAccording to Cornucopia, some of our dearly held vegan staples are, in their beginnings if not their actual physical contents, maybe not so vegan. Veganism is a lifestyle. A conscientious vegan would not accept a tofu dog that was cooked on the same grill as a beef hot dog. A conscientious vegan would not buy a dog from a pet store. A conscientious vegan thinks about what they are buying or consuming, and considers the effect it will have or has had on their body, the environment, and, of course, the animals. Because, to most conscientious vegans that this conscientious vegan knows, those three things are all intertwined and equally vital.

In “Behind the Bean, the Heroes and Charlatans of the Natural and Organic Soy Foods Industry”, a study done by the Cornucopia Institute, many of the foods that vegans consume, such as Silk soymilk, 365 (Whole Foods brand), Soydream, Boca, Gardenburger, among others, are revealed to be not as veg, earth, or body friendly as they seem (or at least, if they are, some of them aren’t telling us they are!).

Gardenburger refused to participate in the survey. If they have nothing to hide, why refuse? Criteria such as ownership structure, organic certifier, sourcing and farmer relationships, and percentage of organic soybean purchase should not be withheld from enthusiastic consumers. Concerned consumers are urged to contact Gardenburger regarding their refusal to participate.

THE BASICS

DC Vegan Drinks is a monthly offline social networking event for people interested in sharing veganism and advocating for animal rights. Our mission is to bring together people from all walks of life (lawyers, students, small business owners, etc…) to build a stronger community and promote the sharing of resources. A lot of people build these networks online but never really connect socially, this is where our shin-dig falls in. There is no requirement except for an interest in veganism, animal rights, and to have a little after-work fun.

What you need to do:

  • Be friendly, even to any non-vegans that may come.
  • Talk about what you do in your free time, what business or organization you work for, who makes the best vegan cookie, your blog, etc…
  • Oh, most importantly, have a drink and relax with some fellow vegans.

What to bring:

  • Business Cards (if you want to share).
  • If you don’t have business cards–flyers or pamphlets are cool too. Please remember to keep all distributions related to animal welfare/animal rights/veganism/etc.
  • Cash for tips for your friendly bartenders.

Other info:

There is NO dress code, come how you feel. It’s FREE, but drinks are NOT and food isn’t either. Bring CASH to tip your bartenders. Some of the places we visit are 21 and over so make sure you check above to see if this months is.

Fashion is my Girlfriend

Fashion is my Girlfriend is a blog dedicated to vegan fashion, started by Kandace Levy, a 22 yr old senior at University of Maryland. Even though the blog was started less than a year ago, Kandace is already breaking down that stigma that vegans aren’t stylish (Then again, what’s stylish about wearing a dead animal?) I sat down with her for an interview and she explained how easy it is to be vegan and look like a million dollars.

After the interview, Kandace & I enjoyed a delicious meal at Berwyn Cafe.

After the interview, Kandace & I enjoyed a delicious meal at Berwyn Cafe.

M: How long have you been vegan and why did you choose veganism?

K: I’ve been vegan for a little over three years, I started sophomore year of college. Actually, I was a straight up carnivore, as many species as I could get on a bun that’s what I wanted to eat. Literally, in one night I became vegan. I stumbled upon goveg.com and I made a couple conclusions. The main revelation that I had was recognizing where my food came, realizing a hamburger was a cow as opposed to food.

M: There’s nothing attractive about eating flesh. So, how did Fashion is my Girlfriend come about?

K: Partly because I would read other fashion blogs and there is a lot that I wanted to see that I wasn’t. I wanted to start a blog that incorporated all of the cool things I saw from other blogs but with more ethical responsibly and also more environmental responsibility. I wanted to start a blog to inform people on just how easy it is to find amazing pieces and not have to harm animals in the process.
