First Baltimore Vegan Drinks TONIGHT

Here’s the 411:

It’s official: the first Baltimore Vegan Drinks event will occur at 7:00pm on Thursday, April 30th at Golden West Cafe!

Golden West is located on West 36th street, aka “The Avenue” in Hampden, with lots of other bars and classic hipster stores all on the same strip. It has a wide selection of vegan food and drinks (their online menu hasn’t been updated yet, but there are even more great vegan options now).

Thursdays happen to be their “pitcher” specials night, and a list of vegan-friendly beers will be forthcoming.

We’re looking forward to seeing you there, be sure to spread the word!

Daiya Vegan Cheese at Roots Market

Daiya CheeseYou may have heard that there is a new vegan cheese on the market and if you haven’t you know now, Daiya Cheese. Everyone I have spoken to said it is the Big Cheese of all Vegan cheese’s. Its only available for food service and you can get it soon at Great Sage (ask Chef Russell to make you a grilled cheese with vine-ripe tomato, sliced avocado, and truffle-balsamic micro greens) & Sticky Fingers and I am sure there are some other places that will be carrying it too. But did you know you can get it at Roots Market in Clarksville and Olney NOW? Well you can, so make sure you swing by soon before I eat it all. I just picked some up today so I will fill you in with my cooking results tonight.

Oh No! Evil Vegans Plot to Save Horses, Puppies

Yummy Horses

They both look so good! I can't decide which to eat first.

The vegans are coming! The vegans are coming! Hide the women and children, the American way of life, and the meat products!

Stock & Land, a rural Australian newspaper targeted to livestock producers, brings us the terrifying (or terrifyingly preposterous?) news that a vast vegan conspiracy is behind the push to ban the slaughter of horses for their yummy meat! As we all know, horse is the main source of protein for Americans and the criminalisation of one animal-based protein source – horse meat – could be a stepping stone toward making all meat consumption illegal.

Save the horse harvest! (Isn’t that a lovely euphamism? As if horses were ears of corn.) Stock & Land shares that Sue Wallis, of Wyoming, believes that “it is ethically and morally wrong to waste a nutrient-dense food source in a hungry world.” So, finish your horse, Johnny. There are children starving in Africa.

In addition, “Wallis said prohibiting horse owners from a salvage market is the same as prohibiting a rental car company from selling their cars once they have so many miles on them.” Old horses are no different than old cars, you crazy, morally devoid vegans! Horses carry us around, cars carry us around. When they’re used up, we should be able to “recycle” them. It’s green, when you really think about it…

Of course, the evil vegans of the world are not content to deprive us of our precious horsey burgers and destroy good ol’ American initiative. The Charlotte Observer brings us the boot-quakin’ news that North Carolina’s meat industries are battling a bill the Humane Society of the United States and its vegan president say is meant to protect puppies, warning instead that it is the first step toward ending meat eating as we know it. Although evil vegan Wayne Pacelle insists that the Humane Society bill seeks to crack down on puppy mills by regulating and licensing commercial dog breeders in North Carolina — and not put an end to meat eating — the Observer knows that Pacelle is a big, fat vegan liar (albeit with a healthy cholesterol intake). “He is quoted in news articles in the early 1990s calling for a ban on all hunting.” BUSTED!

Kay Johnson, Executive Vice President of the Animal Agriculture Alliance, isn’t falling for Pacelle’s scheming either. Johnson reveals that the “Humane Society of the United States has a very direct agenda to eliminate the use of animals for food.” Ohhh noooes! What will we eat??

Don’t forget, this nasty Pacelle character “is a vegan or strict vegetarian who eats no animal products.” And, as we all know, those strict vegetarians are a dangerous lot.

The Quintessential DC*Vegan blog post

I was biking home from vegan bibimbap today (14th and L– my first time for lunch at the yellow Korean food cart) when I saw this car near Logan Circle. I was running late and needed to get back to work pronto, but I just had to pull around the block to take a picture for the quintessential DC*Vegan blog post. I couldn’t resist!

College students and the culinary-challenged rejoice!

Have you tried to make cereal and sustained a serious injury in the process? Are you afraid of skillets, French terminology in recipes, and hard work in general? Good news! Two of my friends, Marta Holmberg and Starza Kolman, just worked together to release PETA’s Vegan College Cookbook, which is packed with 275 no-frill, tasty, vegan recipes. The awesome new cookbook advertises that the most complicated kitchen appliance you’ll need is a microwave.

Is this appropriate for Hezbollah Tofu enthusiasts such as myself? No. Will it teach you how to make homemade manicotti, right down to the noodles? No. What it will do is give any real-world, on-the-go student or young professional great recipe ideas to stay vegan and well-fed even when they don’t have time to think.

Written in a tone appropriate for college students other people generally more hip than I, some choice recipe titles include Butt Ugly Sticky Buns, Hangover Helper, Tofu or Not Tofu—That is the Sandwich, and WTF Wings. It even includes a helpful cheat sheet of meat and dairy analogues for newbie vegans. PETA is selling the cookbook through their online catalog for $14.99.

Make Earth Day Everyday!

Hug-A-TreeWell there is not a whole lot going on for Earth Day around DC but there is some good stuff.  And here are a few other things I found on the web that I thought were interesting. I am sure there are some more events going on, if you know of any please share them with us and if you have any other good Earth Day stuff to share please do.

April 22nd

DC Vegan Drinks at Bread and Brew from 7pm to 9pm
COK Benefit at Bread and Brew all day.
COK Vegan Feed-In, Dupont Circle 12pm – 1pm

April 25th

Alexandria Earth Day

Some more good Earth Day info at the Earth Day Network.

Some beautiful handmade Earth Day stuff on Etsy.

What not to do on Earth Day.
via Treehugger

1. Don’t drive like a teenager, speeding up and slowing down and weaving in and out of traffic. Such aggressive driving can lower fuel efficiency by 33 percent. Accelerate gently and stay with the traffic to save gas and money.

2. Don’t use cleansers and personal care products that contain triclosan or other antibacterial agents. Public health officials worry that antibacterials in cleansers, window cleaners, and soaps are causing us to become resistant to antibiotics. Use simple soap and hot water for cleaning, and body soaps and lotions that do not say “antibacterial” or “fights germs” on the label.

3. Don’t go shopping without a list! According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, people waste about 30 percent of their household food budgets buying groceries that eventually expire and have to be thrown out. Know what you want to buy before you hit the store aisles—you’ll buy less of what you don’t need, buy more of what you’re likely to use, and reduce the impact your shopping has on the planet. Then put your list on your refrigerator so you don’t forget what’s inside.

4. Don’t leave the lights on when you leave the room. You could save as much as $100 per year in electricity costs by turning off a 100-watt light bulb when you’re not using the light.

5. Don’t leave the computer on if you’re going to be gone longer than two hours, and don’t leave the monitor on if you’re going to be gone longer than 20 minutes. If you plug your electronics into an energy-saving power strip, you can reduce the energy they use by as much as 40 percent.

6. Don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth. Turning off the tap when you brush your teeth can save up to 8 gallons of water a day, 240 gallons a month – saving hundreds on your water bill each year.

7. Don’t buy “snack packs” that come wrapped in cardboard and plastic. Small individual packages use more energy and resources to manufacture and transfer, and are often twice as expensive as the same product sold in a larger bag or box.

8. Don’t use so much shampoo, soap, lotion, make-up, gel, and perfume. More than 25 percent of all women and one of every 100 men use at least 15 products daily, according to a survey of 2,300 men and women, exposing people to hundreds of chemicals during the course of a day. Can you reduce the number of products you use by at least three?

9. Don’t buy new. Remember the 3 R’s of eco-friendly living? They begin with “reduce” (the other two are “re-use” and “recycle”). If you need to shop, start with eBay, Freecycle.org, the neighbor’s yard sale, or the community vintage or thrift store.

10. Don’t sit at your computer all day. Get outdoors for at least an hour to remember why Mother Nature is worth protecting. Besides, if you’ve done all the other don’ts on this list, you deserve to take a break!
