Home Grown Veggies

Eat the ViewIn October 2008, author Michael Pollan called on then President-elect Obama to go meatless once a week, a simple act that, if undertaken by all Americans, “would be the equivalent, in carbon saved, of taking 20 million midsize sedans off the road for a year.” Pollan also suggested that Obama appoint a White House Farmer and plant an organic garden on five acres of the First Lawn.

The idea of a White House garden isn’t a new one. John Adams, the first resident of the White House, planted veggies there in 1800, and Eleanor Roosevelt tended a victory garden during her days as First Lady. Although the White House lawn is now devoid of a garden, advocates for local foods, like Pollan, have taken up the cause.

Another local food guru and the founder/director of Kitchen Gardeners International, Roger Doiron created the Eat the View campaign urging the First Family to grow produce for the White House kitchen and local food pantries. Since its founding one year ago, Eat the View has been featured in over 450 newspapers and has garnered more than 60,000 electronic signatures on its White House Victory Garden petition. In the past week, Doiron succeeded in making contact with the First Lady’s staff, who was very receptive to the idea.

If you want to plant your own garden but lack a lawn…

Well Dressed at the Oscars

Pinnochio ArmaniI love movies and I love parties. Celebrity gossip helps me survive bad work days. So, naturally, I am obsessed with the unholy convergence of film, flash and fame that occurs every year at the Academy Awards. Last night’s ceremony was no different, and I say with no small amount of pride that I swept my Oscar pool.

This time around, however, I also kept an eye out to see who was sporting duds by Giorgio Armani. Armani, who is traditionally synonymous with the Oscars, found himself the target of a PETA campaign after the designer went back on his word to stop using fur. His most recent collections include fur-trimmed jackets, skirts and coats and even feature ridiculous rabbit-fur-trimmed snowsuits for toddlers. According to a PETA spokesman speaking with Contact Music, “Armani uses mostly rabbit fur from French and Chinese fur farms, both of which were targets of recent undercover investigations. Footage shows rabbits crammed into filthy cages that are encrusted with urine and feces. Workers at the farm in China pull rabbits from cages by their ears and shoot them in the head with electric stun guns while the animals kick and scream. The rabbits are then hung upside down and decapitated.”

Although PETA has never addressed the Academy Awards before, PETA took out a full-page ad in Variety, depicting Armani as a lying pinocchio and asking stars not to wear his designs to the Oscars. In addtion, PETA wrote a letter to each nominee reiterating their request.

So, who ignored PETA’s pleas?

The Strays of Iraq

<b>Strays like this puppy in a Baghdad neighborhood are being shot or poisoned with strychnine, which causes convulsions and eventually death through asphyxia or sheer exhaustion.<b> This video landed in my inbox a few days ago, accompanied by a plea from SPCA International to
sign their petition urging the Iraqi goverment to use humane methods to control its population of stray dogs.

The video left me brokenhearted and, in the days since I watched it, I’ve struggled to find the right words with which to pass it on to you. I’m not sure there are any, so I will simply say: here it is for us to bear witness.

I urge you to sign the ASPCA’s petition and to tell others to sign as well. I also encourage you to join me in sending a letter to Iraqi Ambassador Samir Sumaida’ie at the Iraq Embassy in DC.

Unlucky in Love?

Valentine's DayMaybe you’re not having the greatest day. Maybe you spent 20 minutes looking for your keys, missed your bus by a second, and then realized that it’s Friday the 13th. Maybe you’re just the teeniest, tiniest bit cranky about being uncoupled on the eve of the great lovefest.

Don’t fret. I feel your pain. (And my own pain, too, thanks to Vegan Drinks.)

So what’s a singleton to do? With a tax-deductible donation of $150 to the Washington Humane Society, you can earn some good karma and gain the satisfaction of knowing that your generosity provided bedding, food, toys and other supplies to a shelter animal. You can even have your name (or a loved one’s name) displayed on the animal’s kennel card, so that you can visit the shelter to meet the lucky beneficiary of your kindness.

If it takes real warm and fuzzies to make you feel warm and fuzzy, make plans to stop by the Washington Animal Rescue League tomorrow for Catapalooza!, a Cat Appreciation Day and adoption open house. Sample refreshments, peruse cat art and books for sale, and — best of all — meet up to 60 cats who are ready and willing to be your valentine.

Going to ignore the holiday and unwind by reading in the bath? You can still spread the love by making your book of choice Do Old Dogs Dream?, mentioned here before. Author Hal Creel (who we had the pleasure of meeting last night at yet another doggy fundraiser) continues his love fest of older dogs, with all sales benefiting shelters.

So, shake off those Friday the 13th blues! It is Friday after all, and gear up to be your own Valentine. At the same time you’ll bring some joy to a few animals who aren’t even as lucky as unlucky you.
