Go-Bama!
Written by: Timothy Meinberg Filed under: News

I had all intentions of staying up to see all the coverage of the race. In the process of putting Ben (my son) to sleep, I fell asleep. Not waking up till just a few minutes ago running to the computer to see the results, I was very happy to see the results!

Why exactly do you write “Go Bama”? As a vegan I hope you understand that Barrack Obama does not stand for Animal Liberation or even Animal Rights. He has horribly liberal positions on environmental issues, is pro-war, pro-death penalty, pro-prison industrial complex.
Look, Obama’s election might be a step up after 8 years of Bush – but there’s a difference between recognizing a lesser evil and putting hope in false solutions and empty promises of change.
Prop 2 is a good thing… but human laws will never fully benefit all life on this planet.
For a pro-vegan website, I expect more critical thinking than “GO BAMA”.
Cheers,
Mary

Thanks for your comment. I don’t think there is or ever will be a perfect candidate for president. I think that Obama is a few steps ahead of McCain in terms of electing someone who is new and different as well as open to making steps in the animal welfare movement. I think that in this election, that’s who it really boiled down to: McCain or Obama. I voted for the person who was, in my opinion, most likely to affect change, whether gradual or monumental we don’t know yet.
Obama and his family have pledged to adopt a dog when they go to the White House, which will shine a light on an issue that, while it is probably one of the most well known issues in our movement, still needs a lot more attention.
Prop2 is a great achievement that will hopefully lead to better things. A lot of people worked really hard to get it passed. I think that any change is good–and unfortunately for the animal rights movement, it will be gradual.
I am excited about Obama being in office. It’s better than the alternative–McCain and “Pitbull with lipstick” Palin (which I still don’t get as Pitbulls are sweet marshmallow-pups). So that’s why “GO BAMA”!
