As many of us know good vegan footwear is pretty limited. But I recently bought myself a pair of Simple shoes (vegan of course). I have been looking for these all over the DC area for a while (i prefer to try them one rather than buying online) and there are not really may places that carry a good selection of them, except one. I got my pair a Nest in Clarksville, they carry a selection of mens and womens Simple shoes (they also have Keen and Earth Shoes). Now not all of the Simple shoes are vegan but I think a majority of the line is and they are also green. They use a lot of hemp, organic cotton, post consumer paper, and recycled PET . Simple also has a line of bags which are pretty sweet looking too (i have not got one of these yet). But so far I love my Simple shoes very comfy and they have this cool insole that has these little bumps on it to massage your feet.

Vegan Feed-In TOMORROW!!
WHERE: Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall in D.C.
METRO: Smithsonian Metro station (blue and orange lines), Mall exit
WHEN: 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
RSVP: info@cok.net or 301-891-2458
What better way to encourage people to explore vegetarian eating than offering free samples of delicious animal-friendly fare? That’s why COK hosts a vegan feed-in each month, in various locations around the D.C.-area (time & day also varies each month). In addition to serving free vegan food, we’ll also be distributing literature, including the hot off the press twelfth edition of The Vegetarian Guide to Washington, D.C. and Surrounding Areas!
June’s feed-in will be held on the National Mall during the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. This is one of Washington, D.C.’s most popular summer events, and last year we distributed 1,800 pieces of literature in less than an hour! Join us and help us top that number as we offer festival-goers free samples of orange “chicken” and encourage them to transition to a more compassionate diet.
For more info and pics from last years visit: http://www.cok.net/events
Unfortunately I will not make this one, I have to work!

Mine are not vegan. Not really sure why. My wife has explained to me why our cats should not be. Our dogs could be I know that there is Vegan dog food (Evolution & V-Dog), It might help the fat one. We have actually given them some in the past, and they loved it, but what would’nt they eat, my fat one eats diapers.

Veganic Farming
I came across this artical in the Washington Post, I actually never really thought about what is used to grow my lovely vegetables, like manure. I did’nt even know that organic farming can use animal by byproducts to grow vegetables. Instead of using the traditional manure veganic farmers use “green manure”, which is composed plant matter. According to the Veganic Agriculture Network there are only two farms on the East Coast and United States that are Veganic Farms. One of them is in New York and other in Florida. Maybe this will be the next organic or local, but with only 2 farms in the whole country its going to take some time.
Much like certified organic farmers, veganic farmers use no synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or genetically modified ingredients. Veganic farmers take it to another level by not using any manures or slaughterhouse byproducts. They don’t even use organically approved pesticides.
Here are some good resources to learn more about Veganic Farming:

We’re BACK!
Well I giving DC Vegan another shot. I hope to keep posts going on a regular basis and I will except articals and such from our readers if you have something you would like to share.
To tell you a little bit about myself, my name is Tim Meinberg I have been vegan for around 3 years now. I work in IT doing all kinds of stuff from networking to graphic design. I have lived in the DC area my whole life, I love it and hate it here, but I am not going to get into that. I love my bicycles too, I worked in the bike industry for several years before I got into IT, did a some racing too, mostly cyclocross. I hope to provide you readers with some good reading, articles, ramblings, reviews, and the such. I am not the best writer in the world, and I hated English class, so I am sure there will be type-o’s (is that right???) and long sentences, so don’t hate me!
Send your love to keep me going!
Peace
